Jennifer Lawrence: Oscar-winner, philanthropist and now top-20 pop star.

The actress’ recording of “The Hanging Tree” has landed at No. 14 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published Sunday, and it’s new at No. 12 on ARIA’s Australian Top 50 Singles Chart.

The song appears on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, which has been omnipresent since it enjoyed its world premiere Nov. 10 at the Odeon cinema in London’s Leicester Square.

“The Hanging Tree” has outperformed expectations for its first week on the U.K. sales chart. The song, performed by James Newton Howard featuring Lawrence, had shaped for a solid chart berth when the Official Charts Company announced it had come in at No. 29 on the mid-week sales.

Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen in the dystopian Hunger Games films. The latest in the series is dominating the U.K. box office, scoring the year’s biggest opening weekend with $19.9 million.

Lawrence is hoping to replicate her chart success in the U.S. She’s aiming for a top-40 bow with “The Hanging Tree” on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

The song was written by Suzanne Collins (author of The Hunger Gamesseries of books) and The Lumineers’ Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz. It’s heard in the film first as an a cappella performance by Lawrence (in character as Katniss), before she is joined by a choir and an orchestra.

Jennifer Lawrence is aiming to score her first hit single on Billboard’s charts.

The Academy Award-winning actress is heading for the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with “The Hanging Tree,” from her film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part I.

Industry forecasters suggest the song, performed by James Newton Howard featuring Lawrence, may sell upwards of 150,000 downloads in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 30. The song was released as part of Howard’s score album for Mockingjay, which was released on Nov. 24.

That sales figure alone should be enough to enable the song’s debut in the top 40 of the Hot 100, the top 10 of which will be revealed on Wednesday (Dec. 3). (The Hot 100 blends sales, airplay and streaming data to rank the 100 most popular songs of the week.)

“The Hanging Tree” was written by Suzanne Collins (author of The Hunger Games series of books) and The Lumineers’ Jeremiah Fraites and Wesley Schultz. The song is heard in the film first as an a cappella performance by Lawrence (in character as Katniss Everdeen), before she is joined by a choir and an orchestra.

Lawrence recently discussed her unlikely turn as a singer on the Nov. 11 edition of The Late Show With David Letterman. “I do not like singing in front of other people. It’s like my biggest fear. I cried on set that day,” she told host Letterman. “That was awful.”
