In X-Men: Days of Future Past, the U.S. government is terrified that mutants might one day take over. And that’s exactly what they did on Friday, earning an estimated $36 million on the film’s first day in theaters. That debut makes it the third-highest movie opening of the year. (Last weekend, Godzilla crushed the competition with $38.5 million, while Marvel flick Captain America: The Winter Soldier took in a cool $36.9 million in April.)

Starring veteran mutants Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, and Ian McKellan, and X-Men: First Class alums James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence, the Bryan Singer-directed time-travel movie was the seventh X-Men film to date — and the most expensive, costing 20th Century Fox an estimated $200 million. EW’s Chris Nashawaty gave it a B+, saying: “Singer’s return in the pretzel-logic pop fantasia X-Men: Days of Future Past is so triumphant because of how effortless he makes connecting the dots seem. It’s an epic that couldn’t be more Byzantine on paper but scans with ease on-screen.” With its opening day gross across nearly 4,000 U.S. theaters, X-Men: Days of Future Past looks to be a bonafide summer blockbuster that will likely continue to dominate over the four-day holiday weekend.

Here’s the top five:
1. X-Men: Days of Future Past– $36 million
2. Godzilla – $8.84 million
3. Blended – $4.41 million
4. Neighbors – $4.2 million
5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – $2 million

In X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Jennifer Lawrence reprises her role as the sexy, blue-skinned shapeshifter Mystique, and on the red carpet at the film’s New York premiere Lawrence stopped to talk to ET’s Rocsi Diaz about what it took to play the sultry femme fatale.

When asked what she had to train the hardest for, Lawrence revealed that it was her character’s alluring and serpentine mannerisms that required the most work.

“The way that Mystique moves, kind of lizardy-like,” Lawrence said. “So lots of yoga, and learning to move in the exact opposite way that I move my body.”

And when asked where the most awkward place she found blue paint on her body after taking off her make-up, Lawrence just laughed and said, “Well I can’t answer that!”

12Could Jennifer Lawrence carry an X-Men movie on her own?

The Oscar winner, 23, reprises her role as shape-shifter Mystique in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Though the blockbuster doesn’t hit theaters until May 23, there’s already talk that her character is worthy of a standalone movie, similar to Hugh Jackman’s wildly popular Wolverine series.

“There was a regime [at the studio] that didn’t see the worth in [spin-offs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it,” Lauren Shuler Donner, who’s produced all of the X-Men films, tells Entertainment Weekly of the film franchise’s future prospects. “I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”

Donner is also interested in a Mystique spin-off, as is X-Men: First Class producer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg. “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo,” he explains.

“The hope is that Days of Future Past will broaden the audience for X-Men such that it will motivate potential spin-offs even more,” Kinberg tells Entertainment Weekly. Director Bryan Singer agrees with him, saying, “Everyone grew up knowing Captain America or the Hulk, but not X-Men characters—I didn’t even know who Wolverine was. I call X-Men the bastard stepchild of the comic universes.”

The next movie, X-Men: Apocalypse, is slated for May 27, 2016. A third Wolverine standalone movie is schedule to hit theaters on March 3, 2017; Jackman, 45, will reprise his role as the animal-like mutant.
